The Tipping Point on a much smaller scale
Posted by Strada | Posted in Marketing | Posted on 12-01-2010
The TIPPING POINT by Malcom Gladwell is a great book I read last year. It explains the phenomenon of word of mouth , social epidemics, viral ideas…. Basically explains how a small trend grows steadily until at one point tips and is adopted by the majority of a certain group.
I work in a hotel and Phillipe (my coworker and lead singer of The Hangers ) has been gone for a few days and as a joke, I twisted a hanger on his locker. The next day my coworker added another one. The next day there was a bunch more and next thing you know the whole concierge/front desk staff was waiting for Phil to come back.
Made me think about that great book!!!!

Seth Godin’s words of wisdom

Evolution of every medium
- Technicians who invented it, run it
- Technicians with taste, leverage it
- Artists take over from the technicians
- MBAs take over from the artists
- Bureaucrats drive the medium to banality
TV used to be driven by the guys who knew how to run cameras and transmitters. Then it got handed off to the Ernie Kovacs/Rod Serling types. Then the financial operators like ITT and Gulf + Western milked it. And finally it’s just a job.
Same thing happened to oil painting and it’ll happen to your favorite slice of the web as well.

Things to keep in mind:
1. Networking is about being genuine and authentic
2. Figure out what you are trying to accomplish so that you can select who can be a suitable candidate to help you get what you are looking for.
3. Focus on quality contacts as opposed to quantity.

Great advice from TJ CHpaman

What are common mistakes artists make?
Something I always explain to artists is that they have to understand records. I always compare records or songs to babies. With a baby, there’s a natural development cycle. Just because you wake up one day and want that baby to walk, you can’t tell that baby, “All right, get up now. Stop crawling, we’re gonna walk today.” Nah, that baby is gonna walk on its own when it’s ready. That’s the same thing with records. One of the biggest reasons why people are successful is because they give these records the time that they need to develop. They nurture ‘em and feed ‘em and do the things necessary for that record to go through its organic development cycle. Everybody wants things to happen right away. Nowadays records are taking longer and longer to break. You might be looking at four to six months. You have to support that record and be patient. You have to have stamina to see a project through. That’s where so many people go wrong. Lastly, everybody’s so focused on developing a record, they miss the whole point of developing a brand. In order to have longevity and be successful in this business, they have to develop themselves as a brand and create their own movement.

Not happy with existing venues? Make a new one.
Posted by Strada | Posted in Business, Marketing | Posted on 09-10-2009
Gary Jules was a musician in Los Angeles who wished there was a Hollywood venue more friendly to musicians. A place where people would come to listen, not talk over the music. A place to play, not showcase.

Real-time top 40 by Vodafone
Posted by Strada | Posted in Business, Industry, Marketing | Posted on 18-09-2009
Here: http://www.realtimetop40.com
This is an amazing concept by vodaphone. People vote on twitter (#RealTimeTop40) for their favorite song (that’s of course) available on the Vodafone Music Store (at vodafonemusic.co.uk ) You can see in real-time What’s Hot and What’s not.
If I was an artist and I managed to get my songs on the Vodafone music store, I would starta marketing campaign with twitter and my associates to get my chart ranking up…. Is it the first time you can see a somewhat important chart live?????

Good Marketing Quote from SpiralFrog’s demise
Posted by Strada | Posted in Marketing | Posted on 11-08-2009
SpiralFrog executives always had a simple plan to grow their business: build an audience through aggressive marketing and then turn casual visitors into loyal users. Schrieberg and the board agreed that the main goal should be to attract what the former CEO calls “tier-1 advertisers,” companies such as Nike, AT&T, and McDonald’s.
“When I visited McDonald’s and some other tier-1 accounts,” Schrieberg said in an interview, “we found that in order for a tier-1 account to place ads on a site like SpiralFrog, (it) needed a minimum of 5 million monthly unique (visitors). Our thought was that we needed to build volume and then swing over to quality. If you didn’t build the volume, you could never get ads on the site from tier-1 advertisers.”
